Writing a bachelor’s thesis often raises many questions for students, and the answers are scattered across different sources of information. Drawing on graduates’ experiences, the Vilnius University Students’ Representation at the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences (VU SR FCHG) has prepared a guide to make this stage of studies easier.
From student experiences to a new initiative
The idea for a bachelor’s thesis guide came up while VU SR FCHG was planning its activities for the year. A recent graduate who took part in one of the planning sessions pointed out the difficulties students face when writing their thesis and raised the need to find ways to make the process easier. Although at the time the decision was made to focus on course descriptions, the issue was not forgotten. To better understand the situation, VU SR FCHG representatives reached out to several faculty alumni and asked them how they had managed to write and defend their theses.
“We asked several different FCHG alumni how writing and defending their thesis went, and we realised that every student faces different problems,” says VU SR FCHG Chairwoman Goda Bukelytė.
Based on these different experiences, the decision was made to prepare a single document that would cover the main parts of the thesis, offer practical tips and link to useful sources of information.
How does the guide help students?
When writing a bachelor’s thesis, it is important to follow academic requirements, use scientific sources properly and make sure the thesis is well structured. Although the necessary information is available on the university and faculty websites, finding it can take time, especially if you don’t know where to look for specific answers.
The guide prepared by VU SR FCHG presents the key requirements concisely, and its links lead directly to more detailed documents. This way, students can find the information they need faster and spend more time on writing the thesis itself.
“Together with the documents provided by FCHG, this guide is a good starting point for writing your thesis,” says G. Bukelytė.
What information does the guide contain?
One of the main parts of the guide is a summary of the methodological guidelines for written work. It outlines the structure of the bachelor’s thesis and the requirements and length for each section, with links to additional methodological materials. Students can also find out where to look for examples of theses from previous years and where to review the assessment criteria. Separate sections cover citing scientific sources, academic ethics and the use of artificial intelligence, with references to the relevant university guidelines. The guide also introduces various helpful software, scientific databases and resources offered by the Vilnius University Library. These include tools for managing references, drawing chemical structures and schemes, and preparing visual materials.
Information changes and is updated over time, so changes and key details (dates, defence procedures, etc.) should always be checked on the VU FCHG website. For further questions, students can also contact the faculty’s study coordinator or the VU SR FCHG academic affairs coordinator.
YOU CAN FIND THE GUIDE HERE.
We wish you the best of luck at this stage of your studies!
