New Team of Students' Representatives Elected

By decision of the VU SR Parliament, the following Students' Representatives will represent students' interests in the Senate of Vilnius University:

Povilas Virbašius (VU TF), Simonas Granskas (VU TF), Rokas Urbonas (VU CHGF), Tadas Lekšas (VU FF), Samanta Valiušaitytė (VU FsF), Emilis Mikulskis (VU TSPMI), Agata Bruzgul (VU MF), Gabija Smailytė (VU FlF), and Mindaugas Kaziukonis (VU IF).

Before the election, the candidates introduced themselves to the members of the Parliament, presented their experience and motivation, and outlined the issues they intend to focus on during their term. They also answered questions from Parliament members and guests about their readiness to represent students' interests, maintain communication with the student community, and cooperate with other Students' Representatives.

The participation of Students' Representatives in the Senate provides an opportunity to bring the student perspective into discussions taking place at the University. By examining proposals and documents submitted to the Senate, the representatives assess how planned decisions may affect students from different study cycles, study programmes, and academic units.

"Student representation in the Senate is not limited to attending meetings or voting. It is a continuous effort to understand different student experiences, assess the impact of upcoming decisions, and advocate for students' interests in a well-reasoned manner. It is important that the elected representatives maintain close contact with the community, as this is the only way to ensure that the real needs of students are addressed in the Senate,” says Uršulė Barkauskaitė, President of VU SR.

During the upcoming term, the elected representatives will participate in discussions taking place in the Senate and its committees, examine submitted documents, jointly develop students' positions, and submit proposals on issues relevant to students.

The activities of the Students' Representatives in the Senate will be regularly presented to the VU SR Parliament. An interim activity report is planned for December, during which the representatives will present their work during the first months of their term, the issues considered by the Senate, and their further representation priorities.

"Being a Students' Representative in the Senate means taking responsibility not only for expressing a position, but also for being able to explain whose experiences and needs that position is based on. I hope that the newly elected team will actively cooperate with one another, with VU SR Structural Units and other Students' Representatives, and that students will know whom they can turn to with issues that are important to them,” – says U. Barkauskaitė.

VU SR Parliament's Work Plan Approved

The VU SR Parliament's 2026–2027 academic year work plan was approved at the meeting. It sets out the Parliament's meetings for the current term, presentations on the organisation's activities, document reviews, and discussions on issues relevant to students.

At upcoming meetings, Parliament members will consider the work plans and descriptions of the committees' work, VU SR positions on the academic calendar and doctoral studies, and discuss issues related to students' mental health, resilience, and sustainable development. The Parliament will also receive updates on the activities of Students' Representatives in the Senate and the Board of Vilnius University, VU SR initiatives, and other areas of the organisation's work.

During the spring semester, discussions are planned on electoral reform, as well as a review of the implementation of academic and social positions and an evaluation of the Parliament's activities throughout the academic year.

"The Parliament's activity plan helps us anticipate the issues that will require greater attention throughout the year and prepare properly for their consideration. We aim for Parliament meetings to be not only about making decisions, but also about holding reasoned discussions based on the experiences of students from different academic units“, – says Povilas Virbašius, Chair of the VU SR Parliament.

VU SR Annual Activity Plan Approved

The Parliament also approved the VU SR annual activity plan for the 2026–2027 academic year. It sets out strategic objectives to be implemented across the University, as well as the activity areas of individual VU SR Structural Units, developed in response to the specific needs of students in different academic communities.

This academic year, VU SR will seek to establish an effective and consistent feedback cycle at Vilnius University that contributes to improving the quality of studies. The organisation also plans to strengthen its institutional memory and ensure that VU SR members use the methodological materials and activity tools accumulated within the organisation when planning and implementing activities.

Another area of the activity plan is strengthening the psychological resilience of the VU community. To achieve this objective, the organisation will seek to provide community members with knowledge and practical skills that can help them face challenges and act in crisis situations.

Composition of the Parliament's Legal Working Group Approved

The composition of the Legal Working Group of the VU SR Parliament was approved at the meeting. Artur Balšaitis, Lauryna Laurinaitytė, Andrius Viljamas Gontier, Gabrielė Kasperaitė, and Daniel Šematovič were appointed as members for a one-year term.

The Legal Working Group of the VU SR Parliament is a permanent body operating in accordance with the Rules of Procedure approved by the Parliament. It reviews the Articles of Association and Rules of Procedure of VU SR submitted to the Parliament, as well as the regulations of VU SR Structural Units, programmes, clubs, projects, and other organisational structures, together with other documents related to the regulation of the organisation's activities.

This ensures that, before decisions are made by the Parliament, documents are assessed from a legal perspective and in terms of their compatibility with other VU SR documents. It also allows Parliament members to familiarise themselves in advance with the comments and conclusions provided by the Legal Working Group.

The VU SR Parliament consists of representatives elected by the conventions of VU SR Structural Units (two from each Vilnius University Core Academic Unit), members of the Board, the President, and Vice-Presidents. The Parliament approves the VU SR budget and activity plan and considers and formulates the organisation's positions on key issues in higher education and other matters.

Vilniaus universiteto Fizikos fakulteto studentai (-ės) apie Vilniaus universiteto Studentų atstovybės Fizikos fakultete ataskaitinę-rinkiminę konferenciją buvo informuoti (-os) naudojant socialinius tinklus bei vusa.lt interneto puslapį. Vilniaus universiteto Studentų atstovybės Fizikos fakultete ataskaitinėje-rinkiminėje konferencijoje užsiregistravo 23 iš 51 narių. 15 užsiregistravę studentai (-ės) nebuvo anksčiau įtraukti į narių sąrašą. Kvorumas yra. Konferencija gali vykti.

Nagrinėdami (-os) teikiamus siūlymus ir dokumentus, atstovai (-ės) vertina, kokį poveikį planuojami sprendimai gali turėti skirtingų studijų pakopų, programų ir akademinių padalinių studentams (-ėms).

„Studentų atstovavimas Senate nėra vien dalyvavimas posėdžiuose ar balsavimas. Tai nuolatinis darbas siekiant suprasti skirtingas studentų patirtis, įvertinti būsimų sprendimų poveikį ir argumentuotai ginti studentų interesus. Svarbu, kad išrinkti (-os) atstovai (-ės) palaikytų glaudų ryšį su bendruomene, nes tik taip Senate gali būti atliepiami realūs studentų poreikiai“, – teigia VU SA prezidentė Uršulė Barkauskaitė.

Ateinančią kadenciją išrinkti (-os) atstovai (-ės) įsitrauks į Senate ir jo komitetuose vykstančias diskusijas, nagrinės teikiamus dokumentus, kartu formuos studentų (-čių) pozicijas ir teiks siūlymus studentams (-ėms) aktualiais klausimais.

Studentų (-čių) atstovų (-ių) Senate veikla bus reguliariai pristatoma VU SA Parlamentui. Gruodžio mėnesį numatyta tarpinė jų veiklos ataskaita, kurios metu atstovai (-ės) pristatys pirmųjų kadencijos mėnesių darbus, Senate nagrinėtus klausimus ir tolesnius atstovavimo prioritetus.

„Buvimas studentų atstovu Senate reiškia atsakomybę ne tik išsakyti poziciją, bet ir gebėti pagrįsti, kieno patirtimis bei poreikiais ji remiasi. Tikiuosi, kad naujai išrinkta komanda aktyviai bendradarbiaus tarpusavyje, su VU SA padaliniais ir kitais studentų atstovais, o studentai žinos, į ką gali kreiptis jiems svarbiais klausimais“, – sako U. Patvirtintas VU SA Parlamento darbo planas

Posėdyje patvirtintas VU SA Parlamento 2026–2027 m. m. darbo planas. Jame numatyti šios kadencijos Parlamento posėdžiai, organizacijos veiklos pristatymai, dokumentų svarstymai ir studentams (-ėms) aktualios diskusijos.

Artimiausiuose posėdžiuose Parlamento nariai (-ės) svarstys komitetų veiklos planus ir darbo aprašus, VU SA pozicijas dėl akademinio kalendoriaus bei doktorantūros studijų, aptars studentų (-čių) psichikos sveikatos, atsparumo ir darnaus vystymosi klausimus. Parlamentui taip pat bus pristatoma studentų (-čių) atstovų (-ių) Vilniaus universiteto Senate ir Taryboje, VU SA iniciatyvų bei kitų organizacijos sričių veikla.

Pavasario sesijoje numatyta diskutuoti apie rinkimų reformą, apžvelgti akademinių bei socialinių pozicijų įgyvendinimą ir įvertinti visų mokslo metų Parlamento veiklą.

„Parlamento darbo planas padeda iš anksto numatyti klausimus, kuriems per metus turėsime skirti daugiau dėmesio, ir tinkamai pasirengti jų svarstymui. Siekiame, kad Parlamento posėdžiuose būtų ne tik priimami sprendimai, bet ir vyktų argumentuotos diskusijos, paremtos skirtingų akademinių padalinių studentų patirtimis“, – teigia VU SA Parlamento pirmininkas Povilas Virbašius.

Patvirtintas VU SA metų veiklos planas

Parlamentas taip pat patvirtino VU SA 2026–2027 m. m. metų veiklos planą. Jame numatyti viso Universiteto mastu įgyvendinami strateginiai tikslai ir atskirų VU SA padalinių veiklos kryptys, parengtos atsižvelgiant į konkrečių akademinių bendruomenių studentų poreikius.

Šiais mokslo metais VU SA sieks Vilniaus universitete kurti veiksmingą ir nuoseklų grįžtamojo ryšio ciklą, padedantį gerinti studijų kokybę. Taip pat numatyta stiprinti organizacijos institucinę atmintį ir užtikrinti, kad VU SA nariai (-ės), planuodami bei vykdydami veiklas, naudotųsi organizacijoje sukaupta metodine medžiaga ir veiklos įrankiais.

Dar viena veiklos plano kryptis – VU bendruomenės psichologinio atsparumo stiprinimas. Įgyvendinant šį tikslą bus siekiama suteikti bendruomenės nariams (-ėms) žinių bei praktinių gebėjimų, padedančių susidurti su iššūkiais ir veikti krizinių situacijų metu.

Patvirtinta Parlamento teisės darbo grupės sudėtis

Posėdyje patvirtinta VU SA Parlamento teisės darbo grupės sudėtis. Jos nariais (-ėmis) vienerių metų kadencijai tapo Artur Balšaitis, Lauryna Laurinaitytė, Andrius Viljamas Gontier, Gabrielė Kasperaitė ir Daniel Šematovič.

Teisės darbo grupė prie VU SA Parlamento veikia nuolat ir vadovaujasi Parlamento patvirtintu darbo reglamentu. Ji vertina Parlamentui teikiamus VU SA įstatus, darbo reglamentus, VU SA padalinių, programų, klubų, projektų ir kitų darinių nuostatus bei kitus su organizacijos veiklos reglamentavimu susijusius dokumentus.

Taip užtikrinama, kad prieš Parlamentui priimant sprendimus dokumentai būtų įvertinti teisiniu ir jų suderinamumo su kitais VU SA dokumentais požiūriu, o Parlamento nariai (-ės) turėtų galimybę iš anksto susipažinti su darbo grupės pateiktomis pastabomis bei išvadomis.

VU SA Parlamentas susideda iš VU SA padalinių konferencijų išrinktų atstovų (-ių) (po 2 iš kiekvieno Vilniaus universiteto kamieninio akademinio padalinio), Tarybos narių, Prezidento (-ės) ir Viceprezidentų (-čių). Parlamentas tvirtina VU SA biudžetą, veiklos planą, svarsto ir formuoja organizacijos pozicijas svarbiausiais aukštojo mokslo ir kitais klausimais.

VU SA TSPMI imasi karjeros klausimo

Šiais metais VU SA TSPMI daugiausia dėmesio skirs vienai svarbiai temai – kaip padėti studentams (-ėms) aiškiau suprasti savo karjeros galimybes ir lengviau pasiruošti gyvenimui po studijų. Politikos mokslų ir tarptautinių santykių studijos atveria labai platų karjeros lauką – nuo valstybės institucijų iki tarptautinių organizacijų ar verslo. Būtent todėl studentams (-ėms) dažnai sunku susigaudyti, kurį kelią rinktis, kaip studijų metu įgytas žinias pritaikyti realiame darbe ir kur ieškoti pirmųjų galimybių. Prie to prisideda ir tai, kad šioje srityje daug lemia ne vien įgūdžiai, bet ir pažintys – o TSPMI studentai (-ės) šiuo metu beveik neturi galimybės tiesiogiai bendrauti su instituto absolventais (-ėmis), kurie (-ios) galėtų pasidalinti savo patirtimi. Panaši pagalba anksčiau egzistavo – veikė alumnų mentorystės tinklas, tačiau 2020 m. jis sustojo, nes jo palaikymui trūko žmonių. Nuo tada nuoseklios pagalbos karjeros klausimais praktiškai nebeliko, nors poreikis jai, atsiradus naujoms studijų programoms ir daugėjant karjeros krypčių, tik augo.

Ką konkrečiai darysime

Rinksime informaciją apie studentų poreikius. Rudenį vyks fokus grupės su politikos mokslų, magistro ir Globalių iššūkių programos studentais (-ėmis), kad geriau suprastume, ko jiems (-oms) labiausiai trūksta planuojant karjerą – ar tai informacija, kontaktai, ar praktiniai įgūdžiai. Rezultatai bus pristatyti instituto administracijai ir studijų programų komitetams, kartu sutariant dėl tolesnių žingsnių. Atgaivinsime ryšį su alumnais (-ėmis). Susisieksime su TSPMI alumnų bendruomene ir ieškosime absolventų (-čių), norinčių tapti mentoriais (-ėmis) jau veikiančioje VU Alumni mentorystės programoje. Planuojame susisiekti su bent 100 alumnų (-čių), o apie galimybę prisijungti prie programos papasakosime ir socialiniuose tinkluose. Karjeros temas įtrauksime į patį studijų procesą. Kartu su dėstytojais (-omis) išbandysime praktines paskaitas, į kurias kviesime savo sričių profesionalus (-es), organizuosime renginį, kuriame studentai (-ės) galės susipažinti su alumnais (-ėmis) ir pasidalinti patirtimi, o taip pat – atvirų durų dienas bent dešimtyje įmonių ar institucijų, kuriose studentai (-ės) iš arčiau pamatys, kaip atrodo darbas skirtingose srityse.

VU SA TSPMI takes on the career question

This year, VU SA TSPMI is focusing on one important issue – helping students get a clearer sense of their career options and feel more prepared for life after graduation. Political science and international relations studies open up a very wide range of career paths – from state institutions to international organisations or business. That's exactly why it's often hard for students to figure out which direction to take, how to apply what they've learned in real work, and where to look for their first opportunities. On top of that, in this field, skills alone often aren't enough – connections matter too. Right now, TSPMI students have almost no direct contact with the institute's graduates, who could share their own experience. Something like this used to exist – an alumni mentorship network was running until 2020, when it stopped because there weren't enough people to keep it going. Since then, there's been almost no consistent career support, even though the need for it has only grown with new study programmes and more career paths to choose from.

What we'll actually be doing

Gathering information on what students need. This autumn, we'll be running focus groups with political science, master's, and Global Challenges Programme students, to better understand what they're missing most when it comes to planning a career – information, contacts, or practical skills. The results will be shared with the institute's administration and study programme committees, and we'll agree on next steps together. Reviving the connection with alumni. We'll reach out to the TSPMI alumni community and look for graduates interested in becoming mentors through the existing VU Alumni mentorship programme. We're planning to contact at least 100 alumni, and we'll spread the word about joining the programme on social media too. Bringing career topics into the studies themselves. Together with lecturers, we'll pilot practical lectures featuring professionals from relevant fields, organise an event where students can meet alumni and hear about their career paths, and run open-house visits at at least ten companies or institutions, giving students a closer look at what work actually looks like in different fields.

How we'll know if it worked

By April 2027, we'll run a survey with at least 100 students taking part. Our goal is for at least 70% of respondents to rate this year's activities as useful or very useful for planning their careers.

Kandidatų (-čių) prisistatymas ir rinkimai vyks rugsėjo 16 d. 19 val. atvirame VU SA Parlamento posėdyje VU „Aula Parva“ salėje (Universiteto g. 3, Vilnius).

Posėdžio metu kandidatai (-ės) prisistatys, atsakys į VU SA Parlamento narių ir posėdžio svečių klausimus, o vėliau vyks balsavimas. Vadovaujantis VU SA įstatais, studentų (-čių) atstovus (-es) į VU Senatą paprasta balsų dauguma renka VU SA Parlamentas.

VU Senatas – kolegialus Universiteto akademinių reikalų valdymo organas, kuriame priimami visai VU bendruomenei svarbūs sprendimai. Senatas svarsto studijų, mokslo, tyrimų ir kitus su Universiteto akademine veikla susijusius klausimus, tvirtina svarbiausius akademinę veiklą reglamentuojančius dokumentus bei užtikrina kultūros, mokslo, tyrimų ir dėstymo laisvę.

Dvi dienas Parlamento nariai (-ės) gilinosi į aukštojo mokslo sistemą, susipažino su VU Senato veikla, diskutavo apie advokaciją ir praktiškai mokėsi rengti raštus bei pozicijas.

Nuo Parlamento veiklos iki aukštojo mokslo sistemos

Mokymų pradžioje dalyviai (-ės) susipažino su VU SA Parlamento veikimo principais, Parlamento narių atsakomybėmis ir jų vaidmeniu organizacijoje. Parlamentarai (-ės) taip pat aptarė dabartinę VU SA situaciją, organizacijos veiklos kryptis bei pokyčius, kurių studentų (-čių) atstovai (-ės) sieks šiais metais.

Didelė pirmosios mokymų dienos dalis buvo skirta aukštojo mokslo sistemai. Parlamento nariai (-ės) nagrinėjo jos veikimo principus, aiškinosi, kaip skirtinguose lygmenyse priimami studentams (-ėms) svarbūs sprendimai ir kokiais būdais galima juose atstovauti studentų (-čių) interesams.

Diskusijos apie vertybes ir bendrą organizacijos kryptį

Pirmąją dieną užbaigė vertybių debatai. Jų metu parlamentarai (-ės) diskutavo apie VU SA vertybes, skirtingas jų interpretacijas ir tai, kaip jos turėtų atsispindėti kasdienėje studentų (-čių) atstovų (-ių) veikloje bei priimamuose sprendimuose.

Diskusijos suteikė galimybę Parlamento nariams (-ėms) geriau pažinti vieniems (-oms) kitų požiūrį ir kartu apmąstyti, kokia organizacija VU SA yra šiandien bei kokia siekia būti ateityje.

Antrąją mokymų dieną daugiausia dėmesio skirta advokacijai ir praktiniams studentų (-čių) interesų atstovavimo įgūdžiams. Parlamento nariai (-ės) gilinosi į tai, kaip atpažinti ir aiškiai įvardyti problemą, suformuluoti argumentuotą poziciją, numatyti sprendimo būdus bei kryptingai siekti norimo pokyčio.

Įgytas žinias dalyviai (-ės) pritaikė praktiškai rengdami raštus ir pozicijas. Atlikę užduotis parlamentarai (-ės) kartu aptarė parengtus dokumentus, jų argumentaciją ir galimybes siūlomus sprendimus panaudoti realiai atstovaujant studentų (-čių) interesams.

Pirmieji Parlamento komitetų susitikimai

Mokymų metu taip pat įvyko pirmieji trijų Parlamento komitetų susitikimai. Jų nariai (-ės) susipažino, aptarė pagrindines veiklos kryptis ir pradėjo planuoti svarbiausius ateinančių metų darbus.

Komitetų pirmininkai (-ės) buvo išrinkti rugpjūtį vykusiame elektroniniame VU SA Parlamento posėdyje. Akademinių reikalų ir studijų kokybės komitetui vadovauja VU Fizikos fakulteto studentas Tadas Lekšas, Studentų gerovės ir socialinių klausimų komitetui – VU Filosofijos fakulteto studentė Austėja Pupelytė, o Organizacijos valdymo, partnerysčių ir bendruomenės komitetui – VU Gyvybės mokslų centro studentas Kipras Kliučinskas.

Komitetai nagrinės studijų kokybės, studentų (-čių) gerovės ir socialinės aplinkos, VU SA vidaus procesų, partnerysčių bei bendruomenės stiprinimo klausimus.

VU SA Parlamentas susideda iš VU SA padalinių konferencijų išrinktų atstovų (-ių) (po 2 iš kiekvieno Vilniaus universiteto kamieninio akademinio padalinio), Tarybos narių, Prezidento (-ės) ir Viceprezidentų (-čių). Parlamentas tvirtina VU SA biudžetą, veiklos planą, svarsto ir formuoja organizacijos pozicijas svarbiausiais aukštojo mokslo ir kitais klausimais. 

Over the course of two days, Parliament members deepened their knowledge of the higher education system, learned more about the activities of the VU Senate, discussed advocacy, and developed practical skills in drafting official documents and position papers.

From the Work of the Parliament to the Higher Education System

At the beginning of the training, participants were introduced to the principles governing the work of the VU SR Parliament, the responsibilities of its members, and their role within the organisation. Parliament members also discussed the current situation of VU SR, the organisation’s key areas of activity, and the changes that student representatives will seek to achieve this year.

A significant part of the first day was dedicated to the higher education system. Parliament members explored how the system operates, how decisions affecting students are made at different levels, and how students’ interests can be represented in these decision-making processes.

Participants also learned more about the work of the VU Senate. Student representatives Tadas Lekšas and Povilas Virbašius, who represent students in the VU Senate, introduced the main functions of this University governing body and explained the role of student representatives within it.

Discussions on Values and the Organisation’s Common Direction

The first day concluded with a debate on values. Parliament members discussed VU SR's values, different ways of interpreting them, and how these values should be reflected in the everyday work and decision-making of student representatives.

The discussions allowed Parliament members to better understand each other’s perspectives and to reflect together on what kind of organisation VU SR is today and what it aims to become in the future.

The second day of the training focused primarily on advocacy and practical skills for representing students’ interests. Parliament members explored how to identify and clearly define a problem, formulate a well-reasoned position, identify possible solutions, and strategically pursue the desired change.

Participants applied the knowledge they had gained by drafting official documents and position papers. After completing the tasks, Parliament members discussed the documents they had prepared, their arguments, and how the proposed solutions could be used in practice when representing students’ interests.

First Meetings of the Parliament Committees

The training also included the first meetings of the Parliament’s three committees. Committee members got to know one another, discussed their main areas of activity, and began planning their key work for the coming year.

The committee chairs were elected during an electronic meeting of the VU SR Parliament held in August. The Committee on Academic Affairs and Study Quality is chaired by Tadas Lekšas, a student at the VU Faculty of Physics; the Committee on Student Well-being and Social Affairs is chaired by Austėja Pupelytė, a student at the VU Faculty of Philosophy; and the Committee on Organisational Governance, Partnerships and Community is chaired by Kipras Kliučinskas, a student at the VU Life Sciences Centre.

The committees will address issues related to study quality, student well-being and the social environment, VU SR's internal processes, partnerships, and community building.

The VU SR Parliament consists of representatives elected by the conferences of VU SR units (two from each core academic unit of Vilnius University), members of the Council, the President, and Vice-Presidents. The Parliament approves the VU SR budget and annual action plan, as well as discusses and formulates the organisation’s positions on key higher education and other relevant issues.

Prasidėjus studijų metams, pirmakursiai (-ės) atranda ne tik Universitetą, bet ir Vilniaus naktinį gyvenimą. Apie saugų pramogavimą, galimas rizikas ir rūpinimąsi kitais (-omis) LRT RADIJO eteryje kalbėjosi VU SA prezidentė Ursulė Barkauskaitė ir atstovė ryšiams su visuomene Akvilė Banytė.

Dalis pirmakursių (-ių) į Vilnių atvyksta iš mažesnių miestų ir sostinės dar gerai nepažįsta. Nauja aplinka, naujos pažintys ir pirmieji studentiški vakarėliai gali tapti smagia studijų pradžios dalimi, tačiau kartu svarbu iš anksto apgalvoti, kaip bus grįžtama namo ir su kuo leidžiamas vakaras.

Prieš integracijos festivalį „AD ASTRA“ VU SA kartu su Vilniaus naktiniu biuru parengė studentams (-ėms) skirtas rekomendacijas apie saugų laiko leidimą naktiniame mieste.

„Prieš pat integracijos festivalį galvojome, kokiomis temomis turėtume informuoti pirmo kurso studentus ir studentes. Pasirinkome saugumo temą ir kartu su Vilniaus naktiniu biuru paskelbėme rekomendacijas: prieš einant į miestą apgalvoti, kaip grįši namo, su kuo būsi, ir pasirūpinti ne tik savimi, bet ir savo draugais“, – pasakoja A. Banytė.

Jose studentai (-ės) raginami dar prieš išeinant susiplanuoti saugų kelią namo, stebėti savo ir draugų savijautą, nepalikti gėrimų be priežiūros, o pasijutus nesaugiai – nedvejoti kreiptis į pasilinksminimo vietos darbuotojus (-as) ar skubiosios pagalbos tarnybas.

Integracijos laikotarpiu bandoma kurti saugi erdvė

VU SA vykdoma pirmakursių integracija prasideda dar rugpjūtį. Jos metu naujiems (-oms) studentams (-ėms) padeda VU SA kuratoriai (-ės) – vyresniųjų kursų studentai (-ės), galintys (-čios) atsakyti į klausimus apie studijas, Universitetą ir gyvenimą naujame mieste.

Pasak U. Barkauskaitės, kuratorių programa padeda nuo pirmųjų dienų kurti pasitikėjimu grįstą ryšį ir suteikia pirmakursiams (-ėms) žmogų, į kurį jie (-os) gali kreiptis susidūrę su neaiškia ar sudėtinga situacija.

„Integracijos programa stengiamės nuo pirmųjų dienų sukurti bent pirmąją pasitikėjimo liniją Universitete. Kartu su Universitetu siekiame, kad bendruomenė būtų pasirengusi atpažinti kritines situacijas, prieiti prie žmogaus ir suteikti jam reikalingą pagalbą“, – teigia VU SA prezidentė.

Saugumo kompetencijos reikalingos ne tik naktiniame mieste. Jos padeda pastebėti šalia esantį žmogų, suprasti, kada jam reikalinga emocinė, psichologinė ar kita pagalba, ir žinoti, kaip tinkamai sureaguoti.

A. Banytė pasakoja, kad pati į sostinę taip pat atvyko studijuoti iš kito miesto. Per trejus gyvenimo Vilniuje metus ji pastebėjo, kad jaunų žmonių saugumui skiriama vis daugiau dėmesio.

„Kai pirmą kartą atvyksti į didesnį miestą ir išeini į jo naktinį gyvenimą, gali būti nejauku. Tačiau matau, kad Vilniuje atsiranda vis daugiau saugumą stiprinančių priemonių, o šis klausimas sprendžiamas vis aktyviau. Pati čia jaučiuosi saugiai“, – sako A. Banytė.

Kiekvieno žmogaus ribos skiriasi

Pokalbio metu aptarta ir tai, kaip jaunam žmogui suprasti, kada pramogaujant peržengiama saugi riba. VU SA prezidentė Uršulė Barkauskaitė pabrėžia, kad vieno visiems tinkamo atsakymo nėra – žmonės skiriasi savo patirtimi, savijauta ir tuo, kaip juos veikia alkoholis ar aplinka.

„Kiekvieno žmogaus ribos yra skirtingos, todėl negalime nustatyti vieno standarto, kuris tiktų visiems. Svarbiausia šalia turėti žmonių, kurie padėtų išvengti kritinių situacijų, kad ir kokios būtų tavo asmeninės ribos“, – sako ji.

Būtent todėl svarbu į miestą eiti su žmonėmis, kuriais pasitikima, nepalikti vieno prastai pasijutusio draugo ar draugės ir nebijoti paklausti, ar žmogui viskas gerai. Kartais paprastas klausimas ar pasiūlyta pagalba gali užkirsti kelią gerokai rimtesnei situacijai.

VU SA atstovė ryšiams su visuomene Akvilė Banytė atkreipia dėmesį, kad pirmųjų išėjimų į miestą metu reikšmingą vaidmenį atlieka ir VU SA kuratoriai (-ės).

„Kuratoriai jau turi daugiau patirties ir geriau pažįsta studentišką gyvenimą. Jie mokomi stebėti situaciją ir per pirmuosius bendrus išėjimus prisiima dalį atsakomybės už pirmakursius, padėdami jiems pažinti bei nusistatyti savo ribas“, – pasakoja A. Banytė.

VU SA siekia, kad pokalbis apie jaunų žmonių saugumą nesibaigtų vienkartine rekomendacijų kampanija. Bendradarbiaujant su Vilniaus universitetu ir Vilniaus naktiniu biuru ketinama toliau ieškoti būdų, kaip studentams (-ėms) suteikti praktinių žinių apie elgesį kritinėse situacijose ir pagalbą kitam žmogui.

Kalbėjimas apie naktinio gyvenimo rizikas nėra skirtas gąsdinti ar riboti studentiškas patirtis. Jo tikslas – suteikti studentams (-ėms) žinių, kurios padėtų sąmoningai priimti sprendimus, saugiai leisti laiką ir kurti vieniems kitais besirūpinančią bendruomenę.

At the beginning of the academic year, first-year students discover not only the University but also Vilnius nightlife. VU SR President Ursulė Barkauskaitė and Public Relations Representative Akvilė Banytė spoke on LRT RADIO about staying safe while going out, potential risks, and looking out for others.

Some first-year students come to Vilnius from smaller towns and are not yet familiar with the capital. A new environment, new people, and the first student parties can be an exciting part of starting university. At the same time, it is important to think ahead about how you will get home and who you will spend the evening with.

Ahead of the integration festival “AD ASTRA”, VU SR, together with the Vilnius Night Office, prepared recommendations for students on staying safe while enjoying the city at night.

“Just before the integration festival, we were thinking about the topics we should address when informing first-year students. We chose safety and, together with the Vilnius Night Office, published recommendations: before going out, think about how you will get home, who you will be with, and make sure to look after not only yourself but also your friends,” says A. Banytė.

Students are encouraged to plan a safe way home before going out, pay attention to their own well-being and that of their friends, never leave drinks unattended, and, if they feel unsafe, not hesitate to approach staff at the venue or contact emergency services.

Creating a Safe Environment During the Integration Period

VU SR's first-year student integration programme begins as early as August. During this period, new students are supported by VU SR mentors – senior students who can answer questions about studies, the University, and life in a new city.

According to U. Barkauskaitė, the mentor programme helps build a relationship based on trust from the very first days and gives first-year students someone they can turn to when faced with an unfamiliar or difficult situation.

“Through the integration programme, we try to establish at least an initial line of trust within the University from the very first days. Together with the University, we aim to ensure that the community is prepared to recognise critical situations, approach someone who may need help, and provide the support they need,” says the VU SR President.

Safety skills are important not only when enjoying the city at night. They help people notice those around them, recognise when someone may need emotional, psychological, or other support, and understand how to respond appropriately.

A. Banytė says that she also moved to the capital from another city to study. During her three years of living in Vilnius, she has noticed increasing attention being paid to the safety of young people.

“When you first move to a bigger city and start exploring its nightlife, it can feel intimidating. However, I can see that more and more measures aimed at improving safety are being introduced in Vilnius, and the issue is being addressed increasingly actively. Personally, I feel safe here,” says A. Banytė.

Everyone’s Limits Are Different

The conversation also addressed how young people can recognise when they are crossing a safe boundary while going out. VU SR President Ursulė Barkauskaitė emphasises that there is no single answer that applies to everyone – people differ in their experiences, how they feel, and how alcohol or their surroundings affect them.

“Everyone’s limits are different, so we cannot set a single standard that would work for everyone. The most important thing is to have people around you who can help prevent critical situations, whatever your personal limits may be,” she says.

This is precisely why it is important to go out with people you trust, never leave a friend alone if they are feeling unwell, and not be afraid to ask whether someone is okay. Sometimes, a simple question or an offer of help can prevent a much more serious situation.

VU SR Public Relations Representative Akvilė Banytė points out that VU SR mentors also play an important role during students’ first nights out in the city.

“Mentors already have more experience and are more familiar with student life. They are trained to pay attention to what is happening around them, and during the first group outings they take on part of the responsibility for first-year students, helping them understand and establish their own limits,” says A. Banytė.

VU SR aims to ensure that the conversation about young people’s safety does not end with a one-off recommendations campaign. In cooperation with Vilnius University and the Vilnius Night Office, VU SR intends to continue exploring ways to provide students with practical knowledge on how to respond in critical situations and how to help others.

Talking about the risks associated with nightlife is not intended to frighten students or restrict their university experience. The aim is to provide them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, enjoy their time safely, and build a community in which people look out for one another.

VU Senatas – kolegialus Universiteto akademinių reikalų valdymo organas, kuriame priimami visai VU bendruomenei svarbūs sprendimai. Senatas svarsto studijų, mokslo, tyrimų ir kitus su Universiteto akademine veikla susijusius klausimus, tvirtina svarbiausius akademinę veiklą reglamentuojančius dokumentus bei užtikrina kultūros, mokslo, tyrimų ir dėstymo laisvę. 

Studentų (-čių) atstovai (-ės) Senate siekia, kad priimant šiuos sprendimus būtų girdimas studentų (-čių) balsas ir atsižvelgiama į jų poreikius. Jie (-os) nagrinėja Senatui teikiamus klausimus, dalyvauja komitetų ir darbo grupių veikloje, konsultuojasi su studentais (-ėmis) bei VU SA bendruomene ir teikia siūlymus dėl studijų kokybės bei studentų studijų sąlygų gerinimo.

Norintieji (-čios) kandidatuoti iki rugsėjo 13 dienos 23:59 val. el. paštu pirmininkas@vusa.lt turi pateikti gyvenimo aprašymą, motyvacinį laišką, interesų deklaraciją, kurią rasi čia. 

Dokumentus prašome siųsti laiško temos laukelyje nurodant „Kandidatūra į VU Senatą“. 

Vadovaujantis Vilniaus universiteto Statutu, studentų (-čių) atstovai (-ės) į Senatą renkami VU SA nustatyta tvarka. Pagal VU SA įstatus juos (-as) paprasta balsų dauguma renka VU SA Parlamentas. 

Kandidatų (-čių) pristatymas ir rinkimai vyks atvirame VU SA Parlamento posėdyje rugsėjo 16 dieną. 

Šių rinkimų metu bus renkami (-os) 9 studentų (-čių) atstovai (-ės).

The VU Senate is a collegial governing body for the University’s academic affairs, where decisions important to the entire VU community are made. The Senate considers matters related to studies, research and other areas of the University’s academic activities, approves key documents regulating academic activities, and ensures freedom of culture, science, research and teaching.

Student representatives in the Senate work to ensure that students’ voices are heard and their needs are taken into account when these decisions are made. They review matters submitted to the Senate, participate in the work of committees and working groups, consult with students and the VU SR community, and submit proposals aimed at improving the quality of studies and students’ study conditions.

This is an opportunity not only to gain first-hand insight into decision-making at the University, but also to directly contribute to changes that affect the entire VU student community.

All Vilnius University students who wish to represent students’ interests and contribute to key academic decisions at the University are eligible to stand for election.

Those wishing to stand as candidates must submit their CV, motivation letter and declaration of interests, available here, by September 13 at 23:59 via email to pirmininkas@vusa.lt.

In accordance with the Statute of Vilnius University, student representatives to the Senate are elected according to the procedure established by VU SR. Under the VU SA Statutes, they are elected by a simple majority vote of the VU SR Parliament.

Candidate presentations and elections will take place during an open meeting of the VU SA Parliament on September 16.

A total of 9 student representatives will be elected in these elections.

Rugsėjo 4 d. Vilniaus universiteto Didžiajame kieme septintąjį kartą vyks Vilniaus universiteto Studentų atstovybės (VU SA) kartu su Vilniaus universitetu organizuojamas integracijos festivalis „AD ASTRA“.

Visą VU bendruomenę subursiančio festivalio programoje – rektoriaus paskaita, kontaktų mugė, diskusijos, protų mūšis, įvairios veiklos ir vakarinis koncertas. Apie tai, ko šiemet tikėtis festivalyje, pasakoja VU SA organizacinės srities koordinatorė ir „AD ASTRA“ vadovė Anelija Slabenko.

Universitetas – daugiau nei paskaitos ir auditorijos

Iš lotynų kalbos „ad astra“ reiškia „į žvaigždes“. Festivalio pavadinimas atspindi ir pagrindinę jo idėją – vienoje vietoje suburti VU bendruomenę, padėti naujiems (-oms) jos nariams (-ėms) atrasti Universiteto galimybes ir padrąsinti žengti pirmuosius žingsnius studentiškame gyvenime.

Festivalio dieną tradiciškai pradės VU rektoriaus prof. Rimvydo Petrausko paskaita. Anelija prisimena, kad būtent ji buvo viena įsimintiniausių pirmojo jos aplankyto „AD ASTRA“ festivalio veiklų.

„Tai išskirtinė galimybė iš rektoriaus išgirsti apie Vilniaus universitetą, jo istoriją ir geriau suprasti, į kokį universitetą įstojote. Kai pati buvau pirmakursė, atėjau į „AD ASTRA“ ir patekau į rektoriaus paskaitą. Buvo labai įdomu sužinoti dalykų, apie kuriuos net nebuvau pagalvojusi“, – prisimena ji.

Dienos metu vyks ir diskusijos studentams (-ėms) aktualiomis temomis, kuriose festivalio dalyviai (-ės) galės ne tik klausytis kviestinių svečių, bet ir patys (-čios) užduoti klausimus bei įsitraukti į pokalbį.

Dar viena svarbi festivalio dalis – kontaktų mugė. Skirtinguose Centrinių rūmų kiemeliuose Universitete veikiančios organizacijos, klubai, iniciatyvos ir projektai pristatys savo veiklą. Lankytojai (-os) galės pabendrauti su jų atstovais (-ėmis), išbandyti įvairias veiklas ir atrasti sau artimą studentiško gyvenimo kryptį.

„Kontaktų mugė yra puiki proga pamatyti, kiek daug galimybių yra mūsų Universitete. Čia galima ne tik mokytis, bet ir sportuoti, užsiimti menu, prisijungti prie įvairių programų, klubų ar iniciatyvų. Kai kurias veiklas bus galima iš karto išbandyti ir pajusti, ar jos tau tinka“, – pasakoja A. Slabenko.

Mugėje dalyvaus ir VU Kultūros, Sveikatos ir sporto centrai, o iš jos, pasak Anelijos, galima parsinešti ne tik naujų kontaktų ar idėjų, bet ir nemenką lipdukų kolekciją.

Pažinti savo fakultetą – žaidžiant

Šiemet į festivalį grįš ir praėjusiais metais didelio susidomėjimo sulaukusi veikla su fakultetų vadovais (-ėmis) bei atstovais (-ėmis). Tiesa, šįkart ji pasitiks atnaujintu formatu.

„Praėjusių metų patirtis parodė, kad studentams įdomu išgirsti išskirtinių istorijų ir patirčių būtent iš savo fakulteto. Dekanų ir fakultetų atstovų veikla labai pavyko, todėl pagalvojome: jeigu praėjusiais metais pavyko, šiemet šiek tiek pakeisime formatą ir padarysime dar geriau“, – sako festivalio vadovė.

Anelija išduoda, kad dienos programoje festivalio svečių lauks ir kol kas neatskleidžiamas siurprizas. Užuominų apie jį jau galima ieškoti VU SA socialiniuose tinkluose, o visą atsakymą lankytojai (-os) sužinos festivalio metu.

Norintys (-čios) įamžinti dienos prisiminimus galės užsukti į tradicinę „AD ASTRA“ fotobūdelę. Festivalį užbaigs vakarinis koncertas VU Didžiajame kieme – atlikėjai (-os) ir visa jo programa bus paskelbti netrukus.

„Organizuodami norėjome sugalvoti kažką kitokio – ne tik surengti koncertą su atlikėjais, bet ir iš tiesų sudominti publiką. Labai lauksiu visų „AD ASTRA“, kad patys pamatytumėte, ką esame paruošę“, – kviečia A. Slabenko.

Nuo festivalio dalyvės iki jo vadovės

Pačios Anelijos istorija taip pat prasidėjo „AD ASTRA“ dalyvių minioje. Pirmaisiais studijų metais ji į festivalį atėjo kaip pirmakursė, antraisiais prisijungė kaip savanorė, o šiemet tapo viso festivalio vadove.

„Man labai įdomiai susidėliojo tie laipteliai. Pirmaisiais metais dalyvavau kaip pirmakursė ir jau tada pagalvojau, kad būtų smagu kažkaip prisidėti. Antraisiais studijų metais tapau savanore – man labai patiko užkulisiai, renginiai ir pats organizavimas. O šiemet tapau vadove“, – savo kelią prisimena ji.

Nors lankytojai (-os) festivalyje mato koncertą, diskusijas ir veiklas, už jų slepiasi daugybė planavimo, pokalbių ir derinimo. Būtent tai tapo viena svarbiausių Anelijos patirčių organizuojant šių metų renginį.

„Supratau, kiek daug nematomo darbo tenka tokio didelio festivalio vadovui. Atrodo, kad jau viską apgalvojai, bet vieną dieną atsikeli ir prisimeni: dar tam žmogui neparašiau, dar šitą reikia suderinti, nes kitaip kažkas neįvyks. Išmokau viską daryti apgalvotai, bet kartu nebijoti klysti ir eksperimentuoti, nes kitaip augimo nebus“, – sako Anelija.

Pasak jos, festivalis auga tik tuomet, kai organizatoriai (-ės) neapsiriboja ankstesnių metų šablonais, ieško naujų formatų ir stengiasi nustebinti bendruomenę. Tačiau svarbiausia „AD ASTRA“ dalis išlieka žmonės ir galimybė pajusti, ką reiškia būti VU bendruomenės dalimi.

Nors festivalis ypač aktualus pirmakursiams (-ėms), Anelija į jį sugrįžti kviečia ir vyresniųjų kursų studentus (-es). Per vienus metus neįmanoma atrasti visko, kas vyksta Universitete, todėl kontaktų mugėje ar kitose veiklose kasmet galima sutikti naujų žmonių ir pastebėti anksčiau neatrastų galimybių.

„Ateikite susirasti naujų draugų – kai turi draugų, kartu prisijungti prie iniciatyvos būna drąsiau. Šiame renginyje susirenka bendruomenė, kuri skatina augti, todėl auga ir pats festivalis“, – priduria ji.

On 4 September, the integration festival “AD ASTRA”, organised by the Vilnius University Students’ Representation (VU SR) together with Vilnius University, will take place for the seventh time in the Grand Courtyard of Vilnius University.

The festival, bringing together the entire VU community, will feature a lecture by the Rector, a contacts fair, discussions, a quiz, various activities and an evening concert. Anelija Slabenko, Coordinator of the Organisational Affairs at VU SR and Head of “AD ASTRA”, shares what to expect from this year’s festival.

University is more than lectures and classrooms

In Latin, “ad astra” means “to the stars”. The name of the festival also reflects its main idea – to bring the VU community together in one place, help its new members discover the opportunities available at the University and encourage them to take their first steps into student life.

As is tradition, the festival day will begin with a lecture by VU Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas. Anelija recalls that this was one of the most memorable activities at the first “AD ASTRA” festival she attended.

“It is a unique opportunity to hear about Vilnius University and its history directly from the Rector and to better understand the university you have joined. When I was a first-year student, I came to ‘AD ASTRA’ and attended the Rector’s lecture. It was really interesting to learn things I had never even thought about before,” she recalls.

Throughout the day, there will also be discussions on topics relevant to students, where festival participants will not only be able to listen to guests, but also ask questions and join the conversation themselves.

Another important part of the festival is the contacts fair. Organisations, clubs, initiatives and projects active at the University will present their activities across the courtyards of the VU Central Campus. Visitors will be able to meet their representatives, try out different activities and discover an area of student life that suits them.

“The contacts fair is a great opportunity to see just how many possibilities our University has to offer. You can do much more here than just study – you can take part in sports and arts, or join various programmes, clubs and initiatives. Some activities will be available to try out right away, so you can see whether they are right for you,” says A. Slabenko.

The VU Culture Centre and Health and Sport Centre will also take part in the fair. According to Anelija, visitors may leave not only with new contacts and ideas, but also with quite an impressive collection of stickers.

Getting to know your faculty through play

This year, an activity featuring faculty heads and representatives, which attracted a great deal of interest last year, will return to the festival. This time, however, it will have a refreshed format.

“Last year’s experience showed us that students are interested in hearing unique stories and experiences specifically from their own faculty. The activity with deans and faculty representatives was a real success, so we thought: if it worked last year, this year we’ll tweak the format a little and make it even better,” says the Head of the festival.

Anelija also reveals that festival visitors can expect a surprise during the daytime programme, although its details are being kept under wraps for now. Clues can already be found on VU SA’s social media, while the full answer will be revealed during the festival.

Those wishing to capture memories from the day will be able to visit the traditional “AD ASTRA” photo booth. The festival will conclude with an evening concert in the VU Grand Courtyard – the performers and full concert programme will be announced soon.

“When organising the festival, we wanted to come up with something different – not simply put on a concert with performers, but really engage the audience. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone at ‘AD ASTRA’ so you can discover for yourselves what we have prepared,” invites A. Slabenko.

From festival participant to festival head

Anelija’s own “AD ASTRA” story also began among the festival crowd. In her first year of studies, she attended the festival as a first-year student; in her second year, she joined as a volunteer; and this year, she became the Head of the entire festival.

“It’s interesting how these steps fell into place for me. In my first year, I attended as a first-year student and already thought that it would be nice to get involved somehow. In my second year, I became a volunteer – I really enjoyed seeing what happens behind the scenes, the events themselves and the whole organisational process. And this year, I became the Head of the festival,” she recalls.

While visitors see the concert, discussions and activities, behind them lie countless hours of planning, conversations and coordination. This has become one of Anelija’s most important lessons while organising this year’s event.

“I realised just how much unseen work goes into leading a festival of this size. You think you’ve already thought of everything, but then one morning you wake up and remember: I still haven’t messaged that person, I still need to coordinate this, otherwise something won’t happen. I’ve learned to approach everything thoughtfully, while also not being afraid to make mistakes and experiment, because otherwise there can be no growth,” says Anelija.

According to her, the festival can only grow when its organisers do not limit themselves to the formats used in previous years, but instead look for new ideas and ways to surprise the community. However, the most important part of “AD ASTRA” remains its people and the opportunity to experience what it means to be part of the VU community.

Although the festival is particularly relevant to first-year students, Anelija also encourages students in later years to return. It is impossible to discover everything happening at the University in just one year, so the contacts fair and other activities offer new opportunities to meet people and discover possibilities that may have previously gone unnoticed.

“Come and make new friends – when you have friends by your side, joining an initiative together feels much easier. This event brings together a community that encourages you to grow, and that is why the festival itself continues to grow as well,” she adds.

Starting university often means more than new lecture halls, coursemates, and first classes – for many, it is also their first experience of living independently. Moving into a dormitory can raise more questions than answers: can I live with a friend, what will I find in my room, do I need to bring a fridge, and what should I do if I do not get along with my roommate?

Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine student Roberta Kirkliauskaitė and Artūras Šaltis, administrator of the five-storey dormitory complex, discussed life in Vilnius University dormitories on the START FM radio show Tiesiogiai iš VU SA. They shared the most important information about the allocation of dormitory places, moving in, everyday life, and why a dormitory can become much more than simply a place to sleep.

How are dormitory places allocated?

Vilnius University dormitories are divided into several dormitory campuses. Students may be accommodated in Saulėtekis, Didlaukis, M. K. Čiurlionio Street, or other dormitories, depending on their faculty and the number of available places at each location. If there are not enough places in one dormitory campus for all students from a particular faculty, some may be accommodated elsewhere.

According to A. Šaltis, it is important to understand that when submitting an application, a student is applying for a place in a dormitory, not for a specific room or floor. Submitting an application earlier also does not automatically mean that a student will receive a better room.

“You have to understand that you are being allocated a place, not a specific room. It is not the case that whoever applies first gets something first or gets something better. Our commitment is to provide you with a place,” the administrator explains.

This year, around 1,100 applications for dormitory accommodation were received. According to A. Šaltis, places were provided to almost all students who completed their applications correctly and complied with the dormitory’s internal rules and financial obligations.

One of the most common problems is an incomplete application. A student may have started filling in the application but failed to provide all the necessary information or confirm their choice. In such cases, the administration cannot know whether the student still needs accommodation. It is therefore important not only to submit the application, but also to regularly check your email and complete the steps indicated in the messages you receive.

Dormitories are not only for first-year students

Although priority is given to first-year students, students in later years can also apply for accommodation. First-year students are prioritised because many of them are moving to an unfamiliar city for the first time, do not yet have a social circle there, and are only beginning to integrate into the University community.

When places become available, students in later years can also move into dormitories. They can register on the electronic waiting list and may receive accommodation even after the academic year has already begun.

That is exactly what happened to R. Kirkliauskaitė. Before moving into a dormitory, she lived in a rented flat, but rising rent and heating costs encouraged her to look for a more affordable option.

“Everyone who had lived in a dormitory kept saying that you are not really a student if you have never lived in one. So I thought maybe I should give it a try too,” she recalls.

The student applied for accommodation in the M. K. Čiurlionio Street dormitory. She had to wait several months for a place to become available, but eventually received an offer and moved in.

“If you are going through a more difficult period, your rent increases, or your financial situation changes, students in later years really should not be afraid of moving into a dormitory. It is not as scary as people sometimes make it sound. There are lots of people around, a shared kitchen, a roommate. If you get along well, you do not feel lonely,” says R. Kirkliauskaitė.

Can I live with a friend?

One of the most common questions future residents ask is whether they can choose their roommate in advance. For example, if two friends submit applications at the same time, but one receives a place in Saulėtekis and the other in Didlaukis, can they still arrange to live together?

During the busiest period of first-year student accommodation, it is usually not possible to take individual preferences into account. The administration has to accommodate more than a thousand students within a short period of time, so rooms are allocated according to the general procedure and the places available at that time.

However, this does not mean that living with a friend will never be possible. Once the main moving-in period is over, residents can contact the administrator, register on the electronic waiting list, swap places, or wait until a place becomes available in the room they would like to move into.

R. Kirkliauskaitė herself took advantage of this opportunity. At the time, she lived in the M. K. Čiurlionio Street dormitory, while her friend lived in the dormitory campus commonly known as “Kamčiatka”.

“Her roommate moved out, leaving one free place in a double room. I went to the administrator and asked whether we could arrange for me to move in, and it worked out. You just need to wait a little until the first-year move-in period settles down and agree with the other person on who would like to move where,” the student explains.

Can I choose between a double and a triple room?

First-year students generally cannot choose a specific room, room type, or floor. Dormitories have different layouts, including double and triple rooms, while the M. K. Čiurlionio Street dormitories also have small single rooms.

However, a single room does not necessarily mean having a space comparable to a private flat. These rooms are very small, while the number of double and triple rooms depends on the layout of each building.

According to A. Šaltis, the University currently does not have the capacity to provide a private room to everyone who would like one. Dormitory accommodation should primarily be understood as an affordable way to help students settle into the city and integrate into the University community.

The situation may change over time. As some students move out, others change rooms, or places become available, residents can discuss changes to their living arrangements with the administration. At the beginning of September, however, the main priority is to accommodate all students who have been allocated a place.

What if I do not get along with my roommate?

Sharing a room with another person can be both a fun experience and a challenge. The routines and rules you are used to at home may be completely different from your roommate’s habits. One person may want to go to sleep early, while the other studies at night; one may value perfect order, while the other does not mind a growing pile of clothes on the chair.

According to the interviewees, dormitory life teaches students how to share a space in everyday life – how to communicate, negotiate, and compromise. If disagreements arise, the first step should be to calmly discuss each person’s expectations and agree on cleaning, guests, quiet hours, shared belongings, and expenses.

If the situation cannot be resolved between roommates, students can contact the dormitory administrator and discuss the possibility of changing rooms. A free place may not be available immediately, but students move in and out of dormitories throughout the year, so a solution can often be found later.

What happens on move-in day?

After receiving notification that they have been allocated a place, students must arrive at the dormitory at the specified time. During move-in, the necessary documents are signed, the main rules are explained, and students receive the keys to their room.

From the moment they receive their keys, students can start living in the room, organising their space, or bringing in their belongings. There is no need to do everything on the same day: you can collect your keys, see the room, measure the available space, and return with the things you need later.

Rooms usually come with a bed and mattress, wardrobe, desk, and chair.

Bed linen, pillows, duvets, and other personal belongings are not provided, so students need to bring their own. Electrical appliances are allowed, but it is important to consider the capacity of the electrical system. Using several high-powered appliances at the same time, such as multiple heaters, can trip the circuit breakers. Additional heaters are also not intended to turn a dormitory room into summer in the middle of winter.

What do you actually need for your first night?

R. Kirkliauskaitė advises students not to bring everything they own when moving in for the first time. Dormitory space is limited and has to be shared with another person, so it is better to start with the essentials.

For the first night, the most important things to have are:

• a pillow, duvet, and bed linen;

• a towel;

• toiletries;

• slippers for the shared shower;

• a few changes of clothes;

• chargers and other essential personal belongings.

“People definitely bring too much stuff. A dormitory room is not that big, so maybe you do not need to bring your entire wardrobe straight away. You can start with autumn clothes and swap them for winter clothes later,” the student advises.

To make the room feel more comfortable, a small desk lamp, a few posters, photographs, or other easily removable decorations can help. However, before drilling into walls, putting up wallpaper, or making more substantial changes, students should consult the administrator.

Fridge and kettle? Talk to your roommate first

It is better not to buy a fridge, kettle, or other shared appliances before meeting your roommate. Otherwise, both of you might arrive with a fridge, only to discover that there is not enough space in the room for two.

“I have seen people having to negotiate over whose fridge they are going to use, who will sell theirs or return it. It is much easier to meet your roommate first and then buy whatever you are missing together,” says R. Kirkliauskaitė.

If you buy something together, it is worth agreeing in advance on who will keep it once you stop living together. One resident might keep the appliance and reimburse the other for their share. Small agreements like these can help prevent conflicts later.

There are no shared refrigerators for entire floors – students keep their food in refrigerators in their rooms. Sometimes food is left in shared kitchens for others to take. In such cases, there will usually be a note letting people know they are welcome to help themselves.

Mould, a broken handle, or a draughty window – who should you tell?

There are all kinds of stories about dormitories – from cockroaches to rooms that are supposedly never maintained. According to R. Kirkliauskaitė, problems can occur, but the most important thing is not to ignore them or wait until they get worse.

“Once we found black mould underneath the wallpaper. We informed the administrator and were moved to another room. These kinds of issues are dealt with – you just need to pay attention to your surroundings and report problems when you notice them,” she says.

If a window is draughty, a door handle falls off, or you notice another problem in the room, you should first contact the administration rather than simply complaining to friends or posting in the dormitory Facebook group.

“If something is wrong, you write to the administrator and they try to fix it. If there is a problem with the window or a draught coming in somewhere, you need to report it rather than just put up with it,” the student emphasises.

At the same time, residents are responsible for keeping their own rooms clean and in good condition. The administration cannot completely renovate every room within the few days between previous residents moving out and new students moving in. The condition in which current residents leave their room therefore directly affects the students who come after them.

Can I renovate or decorate my room?

The possibility of changing the appearance of a room depends on the particular dormitory and the condition of the room. In older rooms, students may be allowed to repaint walls, put up wallpaper, or make other minor improvements after consulting the administration.

In newly renovated rooms, however, residents may be asked not to drill into walls or damage newly installed furniture. A. Šaltis recalled one case in which residents left sixteen holes in the wall of a room that had been renovated only a few months earlier. Changes like these can quickly damage a newly refurbished space, so any planned work should first be discussed with the administration.

R. Kirkliauskaitė said she had helped friends renovate their dormitory room and even lay laminate flooring. When doing renovation work, however, residents should remember quiet hours and avoid noisy work late in the evening.

“A dormitory can be a creative space where you make the environment your own – you can put up posters or choose the colours you like. I have even seen a room where each half had different wallpaper because the roommates wanted different things,” the student says.

Students definitely cook more than just pasta in shared kitchens

Dormitories have shared kitchens where students can prepare their meals. Some have gas cookers and ovens, so if you have never used one before, you may need to learn how to light and operate it safely.

Students usually need to have their own pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery. Used dishes should be washed immediately and kept in your room rather than left in the shared kitchen.

“People definitely cook. Sometimes they even make too much food, go from room to room, and offer it to others so it does not go to waste,” says R. Kirkliauskaitė.

The most important thing is to wipe down surfaces after cooking, avoid leaving burnt food behind, and not clutter the kitchen with personal belongings. Personal rubbish should be taken to the outdoor bins rather than placed in the small bin in the shared kitchen.

According to A. Šaltis, cleanliness in shared spaces largely depends on residents’ own habits. Cleaners are responsible for maintaining common areas, but not for dealing with every student’s personal rubbish bags or dirty pots.

How do you do laundry in a dormitory?

There is no need to take your clothes home every weekend – paid laundry facilities are available in the dormitory campuses. At the time the radio show was recorded, one wash cost around €3 and drying cost around €2.

In some laundry rooms, services can be paid for through a mobile app. The app allows students to see which washing machines are occupied and how much time remains until a cycle is finished. Money can be added using online banking, so there is no need to collect coins for the washing machine.

Still, it is worth setting aside enough time for laundry. Evenings and weekends tend to be busier, so it is useful to check the app first to see whether any machines are available. Residents of some dormitories have to walk to another building to use the laundry facilities, meaning that carrying a full bag of clothes through the winter can become a student experience in itself.

Is it worth bringing a car to the dormitory?

There are parking spaces near the dormitories, but their number is limited. Before bringing a car, it is worth considering whether you will actually use it in Vilnius.

“If you are not going to use your car in the city and it will just sit there so you can drive home once a month, think about whether you really need it. With a Lithuanian Student Identity Card, you can use public transport at a discounted rate,” R. Kirkliauskaitė reminds students.

A car that remains unused for months takes up a parking space that may be needed by someone who drives to lectures, work, or an internship every day. The interviewees recommend spending the first month observing how often you would actually use a car and only then deciding whether it is worth keeping one near the dormitory.

It is also important to park properly – do not take up two spaces or block other vehicles. Dormitory rules apply not only inside rooms and corridors, but also in the surrounding premises.

Many dormitories also have bicycle racks or storage areas. A bicycle can be a convenient way to travel to your faculty, but unused bicycles should not be left in storage for years either.

Join your dormitory community group

Dormitory residents have separate social media groups where they share relevant information, report problems or lost-and-found items, look for roommates, give away things they no longer need, and sometimes invite others to take leftover food.

R. Kirkliauskaitė recommends joining your dormitory group as soon as you move in. It can help you learn about changes more quickly, find help, or simply see what is happening among your neighbours. However, serious faults or dangerous situations should always be reported directly to the administration – a post in a social media group does not replace an official report.

Can I live in the dormitory during the summer?

Students can also live in dormitories during the summer. The accommodation agreement generally remains valid for the period specified in it, and students who want to keep their place for another period need to renew it on time.

The dormitory fee remains fixed regardless of whether a student stays in Vilnius during the summer, goes abroad, returns to their family home, or goes on holiday. This helps balance the building’s maintenance and heating costs across different seasons.

If, after a few months, a student realises that dormitory life is not for them, the agreement can be terminated. Although the agreement may specify a notice period, the administration assesses individual situations flexibly. Once the student returns their keys, the fee is calculated according to the number of days they actually lived in the dormitory.

“No one is going to force you to stay. We agree on when the student will return the keys, and if they move out in the middle of the month, we charge them only for the number of days they actually lived there,” explains A. Šaltis.

The same principle applies when moving in after the beginning of a month – students do not have to pay for the period before they actually moved into the room.

A dormitory is not just a place to sleep – it is a place to live

Before moving in, students often focus on the condition of the room, the showers, or whether they need a fridge. Over time, however, the people around them often become the most important part of dormitory life.

Your coursemates, students from later years, tutors, and people from other faculties or countries may all live nearby. The kitchen, corridor, or your room can become a place for shared dinners, conversations, studying, and spontaneous get-togethers.

According to R. Kirkliauskaitė, moving from a rented flat into a dormitory helped reduce feelings of loneliness and homesickness.

“A dormitory should not just be a place where you sleep – it should be a place where you live. It is a very social space that can become a meeting place. Your coursemates and maybe even your tutors live here, so you are never really alone in a dormitory – there will always be someone you can talk to,” says the student.
